Plankton

We provide specialist zooplankton and phytoplankton analysis of samples
collected from coastal, estuarine and offshore locations worldwide.

Zooplankton and Phytoplankton

Our plankton specialists are experienced in conducting zooplankton (animals) and phytoplankton (plants) analysis of samples collected in both the UK and international waters. This involves speciation, enumeration and staging of the full spectrum of planktonic groups including ichthyoplankton (fish larvae and eggs) and juvenile stages of invertebrate species.

All plankton analysis is conducted at our purpose-built laboratory facilities designed to facilitate highly-efficient sample processing and reduced lead times for our clients. Our laboratory is equipped with a range of high specification equipment including compound microscopes with phase-contrast capabilities enabling our plankton specialists the identify even the smallest larval stages.

Testimonial
Ocean Ecology have provided TLSB with a continued high standard of support as we have worked to develop the AEMP and associated monitoring proposals. The team are innovative and are able to advise on state of the art technology, they have worked with us to develop solutions to complex issues and to design survey methods and programmes for this first of a kind project. The team are also friendly, enthusiastic, efficient and professional and always look to assist wherever possible, often going that extra mile in the service level provided. We have developed a very good relationship with Ocean Ecology over the past few years and I look forward to working with them again.

Key Resources

We have also built a substantial reference collection of specimens of all unique planktonic taxa and larval stages identified for every project completed to date. This collection is continually updated and acts as a pivotal tool in ensuring that all of our taxonomists work to the same standards. This, alongside access to our extensive collection of taxonomic keys and the efficient sample tracking functionality provided by ABACUS, enables our taxonomists to process high volumes of samples while maintaining the highest quality standards.
